א <b>זה ספר תולדות אדם אשר ברא אלהים על הארץ ביום עשות ה׳ אלהים ארץ ושמים:</b>
1 <b>THIS is THE book of the generations of Adam, the man whom God created on the day that the Lord God made earth and heaven.</b>
ב ויאמר אלהים · נעשה אדם בצלמנו כדמותנו · ויברא אלהים את האדם בצלמו · וייצר ה׳ אלהים את האדם עפר מן האדמה ויפח באפיו נשמת חיים · ויהי האדם לנפש חיה מדבר:
2 And God said: Let us make man in our image, after our likeness, and God created man in his own image, and the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a being, living and speaking.
ג ויאמר ה׳ לא טוב היות האדם לבדו אעשה לו עזר כנגדו · ויפל ה׳ תרדמה על האדם ויישן ויסר צלע אחת מצלעותיו ויבן עליה בשר ויעש אותה לאשה ויביאה אל האדם · ויקץ אדם משנתו והנה אשה עומדת לנגדו: ויאמר זה עצם מעצמי היא ולה יקרא אשה כי מאיש לוקחה זאת: ויקרא האדם את שמה חוה כי היא היתה אם כל חי: ויברך אותם אלהים ויקרא את שמם אדם ביום הבראם: ויאמר ה׳ אלהים פרו ורבו בארץ ומלאו את הארץ:
3 And the Lord said: It is not good for man to be alone; I will make him a help-mate. And the Lord caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam and he slept. And he removed one of his ribs and building flesh around it he formed it into a woman, and brought it unto Adam; and Adam awoke from his sleep, and behold a woman was standing opposite him. And he said: This is bone from my bones, and she shall be called woman, because she has been taken from man. And Adam called her name Eve, for she was the mother of all living. And God blessed them and called their names man, Adam, on the day he created them. And the Lord said: Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.
ד ויקח ה׳ אלהים את האדם ואשתו ויניחם בגן עדן לעׇבְדה ולשׇמְרה: ויצום ויאמר אליהם מכל עץ הגן אכול תאכלו: ומעץ הדעת טוב ורע לא תאכלו ממנו כי ביום אכלכם ממנו מות תמות: ויהי כאשר ברכם אלהים וכאשר צום ויעל מעליהם: וישבו האדם ואשתו בתוך הגן כמצות ה׳ אשר צוה אותם: ויבא אליהם הנחש אשר ברא אלהים אתם בארץ ויבא אליהם להדיחם לעבור על מצות אלהים אשר צִום: ויסת הנחש ויפתה את האשה לאכול את עץ הדעת ותשמע האשה בקול הנחש: ותעבור את פי ה׳ ותקח מעץ הדעת טוב ורע ותאכל ותקח ממנו ותתן גם לאישה ממנו ויאכל: ויעברו האדם ואשתו על מצות האלהים אשר צום וידע אלהים ויחר אפו בהם ויקללם: ויגרשם ה׳ אלהים ביום ההוא מגן עדן לעבוד את האדמה אשר לוקחו משם וילכו וישכנו מקדם לגן עדן:
4 And the Lord God took Adam and his wife and placed them into the garden of Eden, to till it and watch over it. And he commanded them and said unto them : From all the trees of the garden ye may freely eat; but from the tree of know ledge of good and evil ye shall not eat; for on the day that ye eat thereof ye shall surely die. And after the Lord had blessed and instructed them, he withdrew from them ahigh, and Adam and his wife dwelt in the midst of the garden according to the commandment of the Lord, which he commanded them. And the serpent which the Lord had created upon the earth, came unto them anxious to mislead them to trespass upon the commandment of God which he had commanded them. And he beguiled the woman and persuaded her to eat from the fruit of the tree of knowledge. And the woman hearkened unto the voice of the serpent. And she transgressed the word of God and she took from the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and of evil and she ate, and she took thereof and gave to her husband also, and he ate. And thus both, Adam and his wife, trespassed upon the commandment of God which he commanded them, and God knew it, and his wrath kindled against them and he cursed them. And the Lord God, on that very day, drove them away from the garden of Eden, to till the ground whence they have been taken, and they went and dwelt on the east side of the garden of Eden.
ה וידע אדם את חוה אשתו ותלד שני בנים ושלש בנות: ותקרא את שם הבכור קין לאמר קניתי איש מעם ה׳: ואת שם השני קרא הבל כי אמרה בהבל באנו בארץ ובהבל נוקח ממנו: ויגדלו הנערים ויתן להם אביהם אחוזה בארץ ויהי קין עובד אדמה והבל רועה צאן: ויהי מקץ ימים ושנים ויקרבו הנערים קׇרְבן מנחה לה׳:
5 And Adam knew Eve his wife, and she bore two sons and three daughters. And she called the name of the first-born Cain, saying: I have gotten a man from the Lord. And the name of the second she called Abel, for she said: In vanity have we come to the earth and in vanity we shall be taken away from it. And when the boys grew up, their father gave them possessions in the land. And Cain was a tiller of the ground, while Abel became a keeper of sheep. And it came to pass after a number of years that the boys brought an offering to the Lord.
ו ויבא קין מפרי האדמה והבל הביא מבכורות צאנו ומחלביהן: ויפן ה׳ וישע אל הבל ואל מנחתו ותרד אש מאת ה׳ מן השמים ותאכלנה: ואל קין ואל מנחתו לא פנה ה׳ ולא שעה אליה כי הקריב לפני ה׳ מרוע פרי האדמה: ויקנא קין בהבל אחיו על הדבר הזה ויבקש למצוא אליו דבר עלילה להמיתו: ויהי מימים ויצאו קין והבל אחיו בשדה ביום לעשות מלאכתם: ויהיו שניהם בשדה ויה֯י קין עובר וחורש אדמתו והבל רועה צאנו:
6 And Cain brought from the fruit of the ground and Abel brought from the fat firstlings of his sheep. And the Lord turned and had respect unto Abel and to his offering and fire came down from heaven and consumed it. And unto Cain and to his offering the Lord did not incline and had no respect; for he offered unto the Lord from the very worst of the fruits of the ground. And Cain became jealous of his brother Abel on that account and desired to find some pretext to kill him. And it came to pass some time after this, that Cain and his brother Abel went out into the field to do their work.And they were both in the field, Cain tilling and plowing his land, and Abel watching his sheep.
ז ויעבור הצאן על מקום החרישה אשר חרש קין בארץ ויחר לקין מאוד על הדבר הזה ויגש קין אל הבל אחיו בחמתו ויאמר אליו מה לי ולךְ כי באתָּ אתה וצֹאנךְ לגור ולרעות בכל ארצי: ויען גם הבל את קין אחיו ויאמר אליו מה לי ולךְ אשר תאכל את פרי צאני ולובש את צמרם: ועתה הסר מעליך את צמרי אשר לבשת ושלם את פרים ואת בשרם אשר אכלת: ויהי כאשר תעשה את הדבר הזה גם אנכי אצא מארצך כאשר אמרת או אעוף בשמים אם אוכל: ויאמר קין אל הבל אחיו הלא אם הרגתי אותךְ היום מי יבקש דמךְ ממני: ויען הבל את קין לאמר הלא האלהים אשר עשה אותנו בארץ הוא ינקום את נקמתי והוא יבקש את דמי מאתך אם תמיתני: כי ה׳ הוא השופט הוא הדיין והוא המשיב לאיש רעה מרעתו ולרשע כרשעתו אשר יעשה בארץ: ועתה אם המת תמיתני בזק הלא אלהים יודע מסתריך וישפוט אותךְ על הרעה אשר דברת לעשות לי היום: ויהי כשמוע קין את כל דברי הבל אחיו אשר דבר ויחר אף קין על הבל אחיו בדבר את הדבר הזה: וימהר ויקׇם קין ויקח את ברזל כלי המחרשה אשר לו ויכה בה את אחיו פתאום וימיתהו: וישפוךְ קין את דמי הבל אחיו ארצה וירץ דם הבל לפני הצאן בארץ: ויהי אחרי כן וינחם קין על אשר המית את אחיו ויתעצב מאד ויבכה עליו ויחר לו מאד: ויקם קין ויחפור חפירה בשדה ויתן בה את גויית אחיו ויש֯ב העפר עליו:
7 And one of Abel's sheep trespassed upon the ground which Cain had plowed in his land. And Cain was very wroth on that account and he approached his brother Abel in his anger. And he said unto him: What is there between me and thee that thou and thy sheep are coming to dwell and feed all over my land? And Abel answered unto his brother Cain in like manner: What is there between me and thee that thou shouldst eat the flesh and milk of my sheep and clothe thyself with their wool? And now remove from thee my wool where with thou art clothed and pay me for the milk and flesh that thou hast eaten. And as soon as thou wilt do all this, I too will withdraw from thy land according to thy words, or I shall fly heavenwards if I be able. And Cain replied unto Abel: Supposing I should kill thee this very day who would require thy blood from me? And Abel rejoined saying: Would not God who created us upon the earth avenge my death? And he would surely require my blood from thee if thou wouldst kill me; for he is the most righteous judge and he returneth to every evil man for his evil doings, and to the wicked according to his wickedness that he practiced on earth.And now if thou wilt kill me, surely God, who knoweth all that is hidden, will judge thee, on account of the evil which thou hast said to do unto me to-day. And when Cain heard the words of his brother Abel, his anger kindled against Abel his brother, because he hath spoken these words. And Cain rose suddenly and took the iron of his plowing-tool and dealt a sudden blow unto his brother and killed him. Thus Cain spilt the blood of his brother Abel upon the ground, and Abel's blood flowed before the sheep upon the ground. And soon after, Cain repented the killing of his brother, and he grieved and wept over him exceedingly, and he was sorely vexed. And Cain arose and dug a grave in the field and he put therein the body of his brother, and then he replaced the dust over him.
ח וידע ה׳ את אשר עשה קין לאחיו וירא ה׳ אל קין ויאמר אליו אי הבל אחיךְ אשר אִתךְ: ויכחש קין ויאמר לא ידעתי השומר אחי אנכי: ויאמר אליו ה׳ מה עשית קול דמי אחיךְ צועקים אלי מן האדמה אשר הרגת אותו שם: כי הרגת את אחיךְ ותכחש אלי ותחשוב בלבבךְ לאמר לא ראיתיךְ ולא אדע כל מעשיךָ אשר תעשה: ותעשה את הדבר הזה ותמית את אחיךְ חִנם על אשר דִבר אליך נכונה: ועתה ארור אתה מן האדמה אשר פצתה את פיה לקחת את דמי אחיךְ מידךְ ואשר קברתָ אותו בה: והיה כי תעבוד אותה לא תוסף תֵת כֹחהּ לךְ כאשר בתחִלה: כי קוץ ודרדר תצמיח לךְ האדמה ונע ונד תהיה בארץ עד יום מותךְ: ויצא קין בעת ההיא מלפני ה׳ מן המקום אשר היה שם וילך נע ונודד בארץ קִדמת עדן הוא וכל אשר לו: וידע קין את אשתו בימים ההם ותהר ותלד לו בן: ויקרא את שמו חנוך לאמר בעת ההיא החל־ להניחו ולהשקיטו בארץ: וגם בעת ההיא החיל קין לבנות עיר ויבנה את העיר ויקרא את שם העיר חנוך כשם בנו: כי הנח לו ה׳ בארץ בימים ההם ולא נע ולא נד כבתחלה: ויולד לחנוך את עירד ועירד ילד את מחויאל: ומחויאל ילד את מתושאל ומתושאל ילד את למך: ויהי בשנת שלשים שנה ומאת שנה לחיי אדם בארץ וידע אדם עוד את חוה אשתו ותהר ותלד בן בדמותו כצלמו: ותקרא את שמו שת לאמר כי שת לי אלהים זרע אחר תחת הבל כי הרגו קין: ויחי שת מאת שנה וחמש שנים ויולד בן: ויקרא שת את שם בנו אנוש לאמר כעת ההיא החלו בני האדם לרוב על פני האדמה ולהכאיב את נפשם ולבם לפשוע ולמרוד באלהים: ויהי בימי אנוש ויוסיפו עוד בני אדם למרוד ולפשוע באלהים להוסיף חרון אף ה׳ על בני האדם : וילכו בני האדם ויעבדו אלוקים אחרים, וישכחו את ה׳ אשר בראם בארץ. ויעשו בני האדם בימים ההם צלמי נחושת וברזל עץ ואבן, וישתחוו להם ויעבדום. ויעשו כל איש אלוק והשתחווה לו, ויעזבו בני האדם את ה׳ כל ימי אנוש ובניו:
8 And the Lord knew what Cain had done unto his brother and the Lord appeared unto Cain and said unto him: Where is thy brother Abel who was with thee? But Cain denied all knowledge of Abel and said: I know not; am I my brother's keeper? And the Lord said unto him: What hast thou done? The voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground; thou hast killed thy brother and hast denied it to me, thinking in thine heart that I have not seen thee, and that I would not know all the deeds that thou hast done. And now that thou hast killed thy brother, simply because he told unto thee the truth, be thou therefore cursed from the earth which hath opened her mouth to receive the blood of thy brother from thy hand, and because thou hast buried him in her. And when thou tillest the ground it shall not henceforth yield unto thee its strength as heretofore, but it shall bring forth unto thee thorns and thistles also. A fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth until the day of thy death. And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord from the place that was his home, and he wandered around a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth eastward of Eden, he and all that were his. And Cain knew his wife at that time and she conceived and bare a son, and he called his name Enoch, saying: In those days the Lord began to give me peace and rest in the land. At the same time Cain began building a city and when the city was built he called her name Enoch, after the name of his son; for the Lord had given him rest upon the earth in those days, and he did not live any more like a fugitive and a vagabond as theretofore. And unto Enoch was born Irad; and Irad begat Mehujael; and Mehujael begat Methusael; and Methusael begat Lamech. And it was in the one hundred and thirtieth year of the life of Adam upon the earth, that Adam knew Eve his wife and she conceived and bare a son in his image and likeness, and called his name Seth saying: God hath appointed unto me another offspring instead of Abel whom Cain hath killed. And Seth lived one hundred and five years and he begat a on. And Seth called the name of his son Enos, saying: At that time the sons of man began to multiply upon the face of the earth and to injure their hearts and souls by rebelling and transgressing against the Lord. And it was in the days of Enos that the sons of man continued the more so to rebel and transgress against the Lord, and to increase the burning anger of the Lord against the sons of man. For the sons of man went and served other gods, and forgot the Lord who created them upon the earth. And the sons of man of those days, made unto themselves images of iron and of copper, and of wood and of stone, and bowed down before them, and served them. And every man made his own god and bowed down before it, and the sons of man forsook the Lord through all the days of Enos and his sons.
ט ויחר אף ה׳ על מעשיהם ועל כל תועבותם אשר עשו בארץ, ויצף ה׳ עליהם את מי נהר גיחון וישחיתם ויכלה ויאבד שליש הארץ. ובכל זאת לא שבו בני האדם מדרכם הרעה, ועוד ידם נטויה לעשות הרע בעיני ה׳. ובימים ההם אין זרע ואין קציר באדמה ואין אוכל לבני האדם, ויהי רעב גדול מאוד בימים ההם. ויהי הזרע אשר הם זורעים באדמה לקוצים ולדרדרים ולברקונים, בימים ההם. מקללת אלוקים אשר קילל את האדמה, מחטאת האדם אשר חטא לפני ה׳. ויהי כאשר הוסיפו בני האדם למרוד ולפשוע באלוקים ולהשחית את דרכם, ותוסף גם האדמה להשחיתו. ויחי אנוש תשעים שנה ויולד את קינן, ויגדל קינן ויהי בן ארבעים שנה ויחכם וידע וישכל בכל חכמה. וימלוך על כל בני האדם וידרך את בני האדם בחכמה ובדעת, כי היה האיש קינן חכם מאוד ומבין בכל חכמה וימשול בחכמתו גם ברוחות ובשדים. וידע קינן בחכמתו כי ישחית אלוקים את בני האדם על חטאם בארץ, וכי יביא עליהם את מי המבול באחרית הימים. ויכתוב קינן את העתיד להיות בימים ההם על לוחות אבן, ויתנם באוצרותיו. וימלוך קינן בכל הארץ, וישב מבני האדם לעבוד את האלוקים. ויהי בהיות קינן בן שבעים שנה, ויולד שלושה בנים ושתי בנות. ואלה שמות בני קינן, שם הבכור מהללאל ומשנהו עינן והשלישי מרד. ואחיותיהם עדה וצילה, אלה בני קינן אשר יולדו לו בנים חמישה. ויתחנן (ויתחתן) למך בן מתושאל את קינן, ויקח לו את שתי בנותיו לנשים. ותהר ותלד עדה ללמך בן, ותקרא את שמו יבל. ותהר עוד ותלד בן, ותקרא את שמו יובל. וצילה אחותה היתה עקרה בימים ההם, אין לה ולד. כי בימים ההם החלו בני האדם לפשוע באלוקים ולעבור על מצוותו, אשר ציוה את האדם לפרות ולרבות בארץ. וישקו מבני האדם את מקצת נשיהם משקה עקרות, למען אשר יעמדו בתוארם ולא יכחיש יופיין ומראיהן. ויהי בהשקות בני האדם את מקצת נשיהם, ותשתה גם צילה עמהן. ויהי הנשים היולדות בעיני בעליהן לתועבה כאלמנות חיות, והעקרות ידבקו בהן.
9 And the anger of the Lord was kindled at the actions of the sons of man, and at the abominations which they practiced upon the earth. And the Lord caused the waters of the river Gihon to rise and to spread over them; and he destroyed them completely, and one third of the earth was destroyed. But for all that the sons of man did not turn from their evil ways, and their arms still remained outstretched to do whatever was evil in the eyes of the Lord. And in those days the seed, which the sons of man were sowing into the ground, turned into thorns, thistles and briars, for since the days of Adam these things occurred in the earth on account of the curse wherewith the Lord hath cursed the earth, because of the sin which Adam committed before the Lord. And as the sons of man increased in wickedness, to rebel and transgress against the Lord, the earth also increased its badness and degeneration. And Enos lived ninety years and begat Cainan and he grew up, and when he had reached his fortieth year he acquired wisdom and was practiced in all knowledge and skill, and he ruled all the sons of man, and he directed them all in the ways of wisdom and understanding. For Cainan was a very wise man, versed in all wisdom, and in his understanding he ruled even over the spirits and demons. And Cainan in his wisdom came to know that God would destroy the sons of man on account of their sinfulness on the earth, and that the Lord would finally bring the deluge over them. And Cainan wrote therefore upon tablets of stone all the future things to occur in those days, and he placed those tablets into his treasury. And Cainan ruled over the whole earth and he influenced part of the sons of man to turn and serve God again. And when Cainan was seventy years he had already begotten three sons and two daughters. And these are the names of Cainan’s sons. The name of the first-born was Mahalaleel, and the second Enon, and the third Ered; and their sisters were Adah and Zillah. Those are all that were born unto Cainan—five children. And Lamech Methusael’s son, became the son-in-law of Cainan, taking his two daughters to wives. And Adah conceived and bare a son unto Lamech and she called his name Jabloh, and she conceived again and bare a son and she called his name Jubal. And Zillah her sister was barren in those days, she had no child as yet. For in those days the sons of man began to rebel against the Lord, and transgressed the laws of God which he commanded unto them, to be fruitful and multiply upon the earth. And the sons of man gave to part of their wives to drink a drink of barrenness, so that they should continue in their beauty, and not lose their fine figures and looks. And when the sons of man caused part of their wives to take that drink, Zillah was among them. And the women that bare children became abominable in the eyes of their husbands, being consigned, as it were, to widowhood, though their husbands were alive, for the men were attached only to their barren wives.
י ויהי מקץ ימים רבים ושנים לעת זקנת צילה, ויפתח ה׳ את רחמה. ותהר ותלד בן, ותקרא את שמו תובל קין לאמור אחרי בלותי קניתיהו מאל שדי. ותהר עוד ותלד בת, ותקרא את שמה נעמה כי אמרה אחרי בלותי היתה לי עדנה ונועם. ולמך זקן בא בימים ותכהין עיניו ולא יכול לראות, ותובל קין בנו רועה אותו. ויהי היום ויצא למך בשדה, ותובל קין בנו עמו. ויהי הם הולכים שניים יחד בשדה, וקין בן אדם הולך ובא בשדה לקראתם כי היה למך זקן מאוד ולא יוכל לראות מאוד, ותובל קין בנו נער קטן מאוד. ויאמר תובל קין אל אביו למשוך בקשתו, וימשוך למך את הקשת ויך את קין בחצים מרחוק וימיתהו כי היה בעינם לחיה. ויבואו החצים בגויית קין והוא רחוק מפניהם, ויפול ארצה וימת. וישלם ה׳ לקין רעה כרעתו אשר עשה להבל אחיו, כדבר ה׳ אשר דיבר לו. ויהי כאשר מת קין וילכו למך ותובל קין בנו לראות את החיה אשר הרגו, ויראו והנה קין זקנם נופל ארצה מת. ויחר ללמך מאוד בעשותו הדבר הזה, ויכה כף על כף ויספוק את בנו בכפיו וימיתהו. וישמעו נשי למך את הדבר אשר עשה למך, ויבקשו להרגו. וישנאו נשי למך אותו מהיום ההוא והלאה, על אשר המית את קין ואת תובל קין. ויפרדו נשי למך ממנו, ולא אבו לשמוע אליו בימים ההם. ויבוא למך אצל נשיו, ויפצר בהם לשמוע אליו על הדבר הזה. ויאמר למך לנשיו עדה וצילה, שמען קולי נשי למך האזינה אמרתי. אך עתה הנה לשבתם ואמרתם כי איש הרגתי לפצעי, וילד לחבורתי על לא חמס. הלא אתם ידעתם כי אני זקנתי ושבתי ועיני כבדו מזוקן, ואעש את הדבר הזה בלא דעת. וישמעו נשי למך אליו לדבר הזה, וישובו אליו בעצת אדם אביהם. אך לא ילדו לו בנים מהיום ההוא והלאה, כי ידעו כי חרון אף ה׳ הולך וגדל בימים ההם על בני האדם להשחיתם בימי המבול על רוע מעשיהם. ומהללאל בן קינן חי שישים וחמש שנים,וילד את ירד. ויחי ירד שתיים ושישים שנה ומאת שנה, ויולד את חנוך. ויחי חנוך חמש ושישים שנה, ויולד את מתושלח. ויתהלך חנוך את האלוקים אחרי הולידו את מתושלח, ויעבוד את ה׳ וימאס בדרכי בני האדם הרעים. ותדבק נפש חנוך במוסר ובדעת ובבינה, וידע את דרכי ה׳. ויפרד בחכמתו את נפשו מבני האדם, ויסתר את נפשו מהם ימים רבים.
10 And it was at the end of many years when Zillah became old that the Lord remembered her, and she conceived and bare a son and called his name Tubal-Cain, saying: After I have withered away I have obtained pleasure and joy. And Lamech became aged and advanced in years, and his eyes grew dim so that he could not see, and Tubal Cain his son was his guide. One day Lamech and his son Tubal-Cain went out for a walk, and as they passed on through the fields together, Cain the son of Adam was walking to and fro in another field opposite them. Now Lamech was very old and unable to see and Tubal Cain a mere child, and seeing something moving about in the distance, Tubal-Cain directed his father's bow and bade him shoot at what he took for a wild animal. Lamech did accordingly discharge his weapon and slew Cain with his arrows. And as the arrows entered Cain’s body, he being in the distance, he fell prostrate upon the ground and died. Thus the Lord repaid unto Cain evil according to the wickedness that he had done unto his brother Abel, in keeping with the word of the Lord which he hath spoken unto him. And when Cain was dead, Lamech and Tubal-Cain went to see what kind of an animal they had killed, and they found Cain their grandfather lying dead upon the ground. And Lamech was greatly grieved for having done that deed and in his sorrow and lamentation he clapped his hands together, and while doing so he struck his son with his hands, and killed him. And when the wives of Lamech heard what Lamech had done they sought to kill him. And the wives of Lamech hated him from that day on, because of his having killed Cain and Tubal-Cain, and the wives of Lamech separated from him, and would not even listen to his explanation in those days. But finally Lamech came and pressed them to hear him on that matter, and he said unto his wives: Adah and Zillah listen to my voice, wives of Lamech give ear unto my words. Now you believe and say that I have slain a man to my wounding and a young man to my hurt, for no harm done to me. Do you not know that I am old and gray and that mine eyes are heavy, wherefore I must have done all those things without my knowledge? And the wives of Lamech hearkened unto these words and returned unto him, following the advice of their father Adam. Yet they bare him no children from that day on, for they knew that the anger of the Lord was growing daily against the sons of man in those days, to destroy them by the waters of the flood, on account of their wickedness. And Mehalaleel son of Cainan lived sixty-five years and begat Jared; and Jared lived one hundred and sixty two years and begat Enoch; and Enoch lived sixty-five years and begat Methuselah. And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah; and he served the Lord and despised the evil ways of the sons of man, and Enoch’s soul was wedded to morality to wisdom and to understanding, and he learned the ways of the Lord. And in his wisdom he separated himself from the sons of man, and he isolated himself against them for many days.
יא ויהי מקץ ימים רבים ושנים בהיותו עובד לפני ה׳, ויהי הוא מתפלל לפני ה׳ בבית ובחדר. ויקרא אליו מלאך ה׳ מן השמים ויאמר חנוך חנוך, ויאמר הנני. ויאמר אליו קום צא מביתך וממקומך אשר נחבאת שמה ומלכת על כל בני האדם, למען אשר תלמדם את הדרך אשר ילכו בה ואת המעשה אשר יעשו ללכת בדרכי ה׳. ויקם חנוך ויצא מביתו וממקומו ומן החדר אשר היה שם, כדבר ה׳. וילך את בני האדם, וילמדם דרך ה׳. ויאסוף את בני האדם בעת ההיא, ויודיעם את מוסר ה׳. ויצו ויעבירו קול בכל מקומות בני האדם לאמור, מי האיש אשר יחפוץ לדעת את דרכי ה׳ ואת המעשה הטוב יבוא אל חנוך. ויתאספו אליו מכל בני אדם בעת ההיא, ויהי כל אשר יחפוץ את הדבר הזה וילך אל חנוך. וימלוך חנוך על בני האדם בדבר ה׳, ויבואו וישתחוו לו ארצה וישמע כולם יחד את דבריו. ותהי רוח אלוקים אל חנוך, וילמד את כל אנשיו חכמת אלוקים ודרכיו. ויעבדו בני האדם את ה׳ כל ימי חנוך, ויבואו בני האדם לשמוע את חכמתו. וגם כל מלכי בני האדם הראשונים והאחרונים ושריהם ושופטיהם באו אל חנוך כשמעם את חכמתו, וישתחוו לו אפיים ארצה. ויבקשו גם הם את חנוך אשר ימלוך עליהם, ויאבה להם לדבר הזה. ויתקבצו כולם כשלושים ומאה מלכים ושרים, וימליכו את חנוך עליהם. ויהיו כולם תחת ידו ותחת דבריו, וילמד אותם חנוך חוכמה ודעת ודרך ה׳ וישם שלום בין כולם. ויהי שלום בכל הארץ בימי חנוך,וימלוך חנוך על כל בני האדם מאתיים וארבעים שנה ושלוש שנים. ויהי עושה משפט וצדקה לכל עמו, וידריכם בדרכי ה׳. ואלה תולדות חנוך, מתושלח ואלישוע ואלימלך בנים שלושה ואחיותיהם מלכה ונעמה. ויחי מתושלח שבע ושמונים שנה ומאת שנה, ויולד את למך. ויהי בשנת חמישים ושש שנים לחיי למך, וימת אדם. בן תשע מאות ושלושים שנה היה במותו, ויקברו אותו שת ובניו וחנוך ומתושלח בנו בכבוד גדול בקבורת המלכים במערה אשר דיבר ה׳ להם. ויעשו כל בני האדם במקום ההוא מספד ובכי גדול על אדם, על כן היתה לחוק בבני האדם עד היום הזה. וימת אדם על אשר אכל מעץ הדעת הוא ובניו, כאשר דיבר אליהם ה׳.
11 And after many days and years while engaged in services and prayers to the Lord in his hidden chamber, an angel of the Lord called upon him from heaven, and he said: Here am I. And he said unto him: Arise and leave thy house and thy hiding place, and go among all men to teach them the ways of the Lord, and the good deeds they have to practice in following the ways of the Lord. And Enoch arose and he left his house and hiding place wherein he was, according to the word of the Lord, and he went out among the people, instructing them in the ways of the Lord. And he gathered together all the people at that time, and made known unto them the instruction of the Lord. And he ordered men to go about and publish in a loud voice in all the dwelling places of the sons of man, as follows: Who is the man that is desirous to understand the ways of the Lord and the actions which are good and just? let him then come to Enoch! And all the people willing to learn those things gathered around Enoch. And Enoch ruled over all the sons of man according to the words of God, and they came and bowed down before him to the ground, and all of them obeyed unanimously to his words. And the spirit of God rested upon Enoch, and he taught all his men the wisdom of God and his ways, and they served the Lord through all the days of Enoch, and the people always came to hear his wisdom. And the kings of all the sons of man served unto the Lord through all the days of Enoch, and they also came to hear his wisdom. All the kings of the nations, the highest and the lowest, their princes and judges, all came unto Enoch when they heard of his wisdom, and they bowed down before him with their countenances to the ground, and they greatly begged of him to be their ruler, until he consented. And they gathered together, about one hundred and thirty kings and princes, and they made Enoch their king and all were subject to his hands and to his words. And Enoch taught them wisdom and knowledge and the ways of God, and he made peace between all of them, so that peace reigned through the whole earth in the days of Enoch. And Enoch ruled over the sons of man for two hundred and forty-three years, and he dispensed law and justice to all his people, and he directed them in the ways of God. And these are the generations of Enoch: Methuselah, Elisha and Abimelech, three sons, and their sisters, Milcah and Naamah. And Methuselah lived one hundred and eighty-seven years, and he begat Lamech. And it was in the fifty-sixth year of Lamech’s life that Adam died, he was nine hundred and thirty years old when he died, and his two sons, together with Enoch and Methuselah his son, buried him with great honors according to the manner of the burial of kings, in a case, as the Lord had spoken unto them. And all the children of man held there a very great mourning and weeping over Adam, which hath become a custom since then among the sons of man, even to this day. And Adam died because he had eaten from the tree of knowledge; and like him so must die also all his children, as the Lord hath proclaimed it.
יב ויהי בשנת מות אדם, היא שנת מאתיים וארבעים שנה ושלוש שנים למלכות חנוך. ויהי בעת ההיא וישם חנוך על ליבו להיפרד ולהיבדל מבני האדם ולהיסתר מהם כבראשונה לעבוד את ה׳, ויעש חנוך את הדבר הזה אך לא הסתיר את נפשו מהם כל הימים. ויסתר מבני האדם שלושת ימים, ויגלה להם יום אחד. ובכל שלושת הימים אשר הוא בחדר, מתפלל ומשבח אל ה׳ אלוקיו. וביום אשר יצא אל עבדיו להראות להם, לימד להם דרך ה׳ וכל אשר ישאלו ממנו דובר אליהם. ויעש כמעשה הזה ימים רבים ושנים וישב אחרי כן ויסתר את נפשו שישה ימים ויגלה לעמו יום אחד לשבעת ימים ואחרי כן יום אחד בחודש ויום אחד בשנה, עד אשר ביקשו פניו כל המלכים וכל השרים וכל בני האדם. ויתאוו כולם לראות את פני חנוך ולשמוע את דבריו ולא יכולו, כי יראו כל בני האדם מחנוך יראה גדולה.ויראו מגשת אליו מיראת האלוקים אשר על פניו, על כן לא יוכל איש לראות את פניו פן יוסר וימות. ויתיעצו כל המלכים וכל השרים לאסוף את כל בני האדם יחד ולבוא אל חנוך מלכם לדבר כולם עמו בעת אשר יצא אליהם, ויעש כן. ויהי היום ויצא חנוך אליהם ויתקבצו כולם ויבואו יחד אליו, וידבר להם חנוך את כל דבריהם וילמד להם חכמה ודעת ויורם את יראת ה׳. ויתבהלו מאוד כל בני האדם ויתמהו ממנו על חכמתו וישתחוו, לפניו כולם ארצה ויאמרו יחי המלך יחי המלך. ויהי מימים בהיות כל המלכים וכל השרים וכל בני האדם מדברים עם חנוך וחנוך מלמד אותם את דרכי ה׳, ויקרא מלאך ה׳ אל חנוך מן השמים בעת ההיא ויאמר להעלותו השמים להמליכו על בני האלוקים בשמים כאשר מלך על בני האדם בארץ. בעת ההיא כשמוע חנוך את הדבר הזה, ויצו ויקבצו לו את כל יושבי הארץ וילמד אותם חכמה ודעת ומוסר ה׳. ויאמר אליהם נשאול נשאלתי לעלות השמים לא ידעתי יום לכתי,ועתה אלמד אתכם חכמה ומוסר לעשות בארץ אשר תהיו בה טרם אשר אלך מאיתכם ויעש כן:
12 And it was in the year of Adam’s death, which was the two hundred and forty-third year of Enoch’s reign, that Enoch put it in his mind once more to withdraw from the sons of man, and to separate himself from society into seclusion, as he did once before, in order to serve the Lord. Yet he did not maintain his solitude all the time, but he would stay away for three days and show himself to the people for one day. And during the three days of his solitary confinement he would pray to the Lord and sing praises unto him, and on the fourth day he would come forth to his subjects in order to teach them the ways of God, and whatsoever they would inquire after he would explain unto them. Thus he would do during many days and years, when he began to stay in solitude for six days and come among the people on the seventh day; soon after, he would show himself only one day in each month, and lastly only one day in each year. And the kings, and the princes, and all the people gathered together with a great desire to see Enoch’s face once more, and to listen unto his voice. But they could not do it, for all the sons of man were greatly afraid of Enoch and they dared not to come near unto him, on account of the divine dignity resting upon his countenance. And all the kings and all the princes held counsel together, and concluded to assemble all the sons of man, that they might come one and all to Enoch their king, and that all could speak unto him on the day he was to show himself again. And they did assemble accordingly. And on the appointed day Enoch came forward and all the people were gathered together, and they came all at once around him, and Enoch imparted them all the words of the Lord, and he taught them much wisdom and knowledge, and he instructed them in the fear of the Lord. And all the people were greatly astounded and they wondered at his wisdom, and bowing down before him to the ground they shouted: May the king live, may the king live! And soon after, while all the kings the princes and the people were talking unto Enoch and he instructed them in the ways of the Lord, all at once an angel of the Lord called Enoch from the heaven to come up, because it was resolved to make Enoch ruler over the sons of God in the heavens even as he ruled over the sons of man on earth. And when Enoch heard these words he called together all the sons of man, and he instructed them in knowledge and wisdom and in the fear of God, and finally he spoke unto them, saying: I have been summoned to ascend into the heavens, and I know not the day that I have to go and leave you. And now before I part from you I want to teach you once more all the wisdom, knowledge and morality you are to observe in future upon the earth.
יג וילמד אותם חכמה ודעת ומוסר,ויוכיח אותם. וישם להם חוקים ומשפטים לעשותם בארץ, וישם להם שלום ויורה אותם חיי עולם.וישב איתם ימים אחדים, וילמד ויורה להם את כל הדברים האלה. ויהי בעת ההיא ובני האדם יושבים את חנוך וחנוך מדבר אליהם, וישאו עיניהם ויראו והנה דמות סוס גדול יורד מן השמים וילך הסוס ברוח הארץ. ויגידו לחנוך את אשר ראו, ויאמר להם חנוך בעבורי הסוס ההוא יורד לארץ כי הגיע העת והיום אשר אלך לי מאיתכם ולא אראה עוד אליכם. וירד הסוס ההוא בעת ההיא ויעמוד לפני חנוך, וכל בני האדם אשר את חנוך רואים אותו. ויצו עוד חנוך בעת ההיא, ויעבירו קול לאמור מי האיש אשר יחפוץ לדעת דרכי ה׳ אלוקיו יבוא ביום הזה אל חנוך טרם הילקחו ממנו. ויתקבצו כל בני האדם ויבואו אל חנוך ביום ההוא, וגם כל מלכי הארץ ושריהם ורוזניהם לא סרו מאיתו ביום ההוא. וילמד חנוך את כל בני האדם חכמה ודעת ומוסר ה׳ ביום ההוא, ויצום מאוד לעבוד את ה׳ וללכת בדרכיו כל ימי חייהם וישם שלום עוד בין כולם. ויהי אחרי כן ויקום וירכב על הסוס ויצא וילך, ויצאו וילכו אחריו כל בני האדם כשמונה מאות אלף איש וילכו איתו מהלך יום אחד. ויהי ביום השני ויאמר אליהם שובו לכם לאהליכם למה תלכו פן תמותו, וישובו מהם מעליו. וילכו איתו הנשארים מהם מהלך ששת ימים וחנוך דובר אליהם בכל יום שוב לאהליכם פן תמותו, ולא אבו לשמוע וילכו איתו. ויהי ביום השישי וידבר עוד חנוך אליהם לאמור, שובו לכם לאהליכם מאיתי כי מחר אעלה לי השמימה והיה כל הנשאר מכם איתי ימות. וישובו עוד מהם ביום השישי,ויותרו עוד אנשים וידבקו עמו. ויאמרו אליו עמך נלך אל המקום אשר תלך, חי ה׳ כי המוות יפריד בינינו ובינך. ויהי כי מתאמצים הם ללכת איתו, ויחדל לדבר אליהם וילכו אחריו ולא שבו להם. והמלכים האלה בשובם, ויפקדו כולם לדעת את מספר האנשים הנשארים אשר הלכו אחרי חנוך.
13 And he did accordingly teach them knowledge and wisdom and the fear of God, and he gave them statutes and judgments to practice them on earth. And he established peace between the people and instructed them concerning the life everlasting. And he spent with them several days, teaching and correcting the people. And while they were seated around Enoch listening to his words of wisdom, they lifted up their eyes and beheld the figure of a large horse coming down from the heavens, and the horse walked upon the air to the earth. And the people were bewildered, and they informed Enoch of what they saw, and he said unto them: It is for me that this horse is descending, the time has come and to-day I must go away from you, and you shall see me no more forever. At the same time the horse came down and stood before Enoch, and all the people around Enoch saw it. And Enoch ordered it to be announced with a loud voice for the last time: Who is the man that desireth to understand the ways of the Lord his God? Let him then come to-day unto Enoch before he is taken away from us! And they gathered together and came unto Enoch on that day, all the kings, the princes and the people, they did not depart from him the whole day. And after he had once more instructed them to fear God and to walk in his ways, he admonished them finally to maintain peace among themselves, and then he mounted the horse that was waiting before him. And he rode on slowly and all the people, to the number of eight hundred thousand men, followed him, and they went with him one day's journey. And on the second day he told unto them: Return ye unto your tents for why should you go along with me, lest you die. And part of them turned from him and went to their tents, but the remainder followed him six day’s journey. And each day Enoch said unto them: Return to your tents I pray ye, lest ye die. But they would not return and insisted upon following him. And on the sixth day many men still remained and clung unto him, and they said unto Enoch: We will go with thee to the place wherunto thou goest, as the Lord liveth death alone can separate us from thee. And when Enoch saw that they firmly resolved to go along with him he ceased to urge them to return, and they went with him. And those kings that had returned counted their people, in order to ascertain how many of them had followed Enoch.
יד ויהי ביום השביעי ויעל חנוך בסערה השמיימה, בסוסי אש ורכבי אש. וישלחו כל המלכים אשר היו עם חנוך ביום השמיני לקחת את מספר האנשים אשר נשארו עם חנוך במקום אשר עלה משם השמיימה, וילכו מלאכי כל המלכים האלה אל המקום ההוא וימצאו כל הארץ מלאה שלג במקום ההוא ועל השלג אבנים גדולות מאבני שלג. ויאמרו איש אל רעהו לכו ונבקע את השלג הזה ונראה פן מתו האנשים אשר נשארו עם חנוך תחת השלג הזה, ויעשו כן ויבקשו בכל השלג ההוא וימצאו את מספר האנשים אשר היו עם חנוך מתים תחת השלג. ויבקשו את חנוך ולא מצאו, כי עלה השמיימה. ויהיו כל ימי חנוך אשר חי בארץ, שלוש מאות שנה וחמש ושישים שנה. בשנת מאה ושלוש עשרה שנה לחיי למך בן מתושלח, עלה חנוך השמיימה. ויהי בעלות חנוך השמים ויקומו כל מלכי הארץ, ויקחו את מתושלח בנו וימשחו אותו וימליכוהו עליהם תחת אביו. ויעש מתושלח הישר בעיני ה׳ ככל אשר הורהו חנוך אביו, וילמד גם הוא את בני האדם חכמה ודעת ויראת ה׳ כל ימיו לא סר מן הדרך הטובה ימין ושמאל. אך באחרית ימי מתושלח סרו בני האדם מאחרי ה׳ וישחיתו את הארץ, ויגזלו ויחמסו איש את רעהו. וימרדו באלוקים ויפשעו וישחיתו את דרכם, ולא אבו לשמוע בקול מתושלח וימרדו בו. ויקצוף ה׳ מאוד עליהם, ויוסף ה׳ וישחית את הזרע בימים ההם ואין זרע ואין קציר באדמה. והיה כאשר יזרעו את האדמה את אשר יאכלו למחייתם בארץ, ויצמחו להם קוצים ודרדרים אשר לא זרעו. ובכל זאת לא שבו בני האדם בימים ההם מדרכם הרעה, ועוד ידם נטויה לעשות הרע בעיני ה׳. ויכעיסו את ה׳ בדרכיהם הרעים, ויקצוף ה׳ מאוד וינחם כי עשה את האדם ויאמר להשחיתם ולהאבידם מעל פני האדמה ויעש להם כן. בימים ההם בהיות למך בן מתושלח בן שישים ושמונה שנים ומאה שנה, וימת שת בן אדם. ויהיו כל ימי שת אשר חי, תשע מאות שנה ושתיים עשרה שנה וימת.
14 And on the seventh day a great storm arose and Enoch was carried heavenwards in a fiery chariot, drawn by fiery horses. And on the seventh day, all the kings that were with Enoch, sent to ascertain the number of men that remained and followed Enoch to the place whence he ascended into heaven. And when the messengers came to the place, they found it full of snow and large blocks of ice all around. And they said to each other: Let us break asunder these blocks of ice and see whether the men going with Enoch did not die under them. And they searched for all of them but Enoch was not found, for he had gone up into heaven. And all the days of Enoch that he lived upon the earth were three hundred and sixty-five years; and it was in the one hundred and thirteenth year of the life of Lamech, the son of Methuselah, that Enoch was translated into heaven. And after Enoch had departed from the earth all the kings of the earth assembled and anointed Methuselah king over them, in the place of his sire." And Methuselah did whatever was pleasing in the eyes of the Lord, and he also followed the example of his predecessor, teaching and instructing the people in all the knowledge and wisdom he acquired of his father Enoch, and he himself did not turn from those teachings, neither to the right nor to the left. But in the last days of Methuselah the people turned away from the service of God, and they robbed and oppressed one another. They also rebelled and transgressed against the will of God and corrupted their ways, for they refused to obey the words of Methuselah. And the Lord became angry at the sons of man, and the earth became more barren, and there was neither sowing nor harvesting in those days throughout the earth. And whenever they would sow, in order to raise vegetables for the support of their lives, the seed would degenerate and produce only thorns and thistles. But for all that the sons of man would not turn from their evil ways, and their arms continued out stretched to do whatsoever was wicked in the eyes of the Lord. And they provoked the Lord with their sinful ways, and the Lord was exceedingly wroth and he repented having made man, and the Lord resolved to destroy them and to wipe them out from the face of the earth, as he did soon after. At that time when Lamech, son of Methuselah, was one hundred and eighty-six years old, Seth the son of Adam died. And all the days that Seth lived were nine hundred and twelve years.
טו ויהי למך בן שמונים ואחת שנים ומאה שנה, ויקח את אשמוע בת אלישוע בן חנוך דודו לאישה ותהר לו. ובעת ההיא זרעו בני האדם את האדמה, וימצאו אוכל מעט באדמה. אך לא שבו בני האדם מדרכם הרעה, וימעלו וימרדו באדמה. ותהר אשת למך, ותלד לו בן בעת ההיא לתקופת השנה. ויקרא מתושלח את שמו נח לאמור, נחה האדמה ושקטה מהשחית בימיו. ולמך אביו קרא לו מנחם לאמור, זה ינחמנו ממעשינו ומעצבון ידינו מן האדמה אשר אררה ה׳. ויגדל הילד ויגמל וילך בדרכי מתושלח אביו, ויהי תם וישר עם ה׳. וכל בני האדם סרו מדרכי ה׳ כולם בימים ההם, כאשר רבו על פני האדמה בבנים ובבנות. וילמדו איש את רעהו את דרכיהם הרעים, וילכו הלוך ופשוע בה׳. ויעשו להם איש אלוקו ויגזלו ויחמסו ויעשקו איש את רעהו ואיש את קרובו וישחיתו הארץ, ותמלא הארץ חמס. וילכו שופטיהם ושוטריהם אל כל בנות האדם, ויקחו להם נשים בחזקה מתחת בעליהן מכל אשר בחרו. וגם מבהמת הארץ ומחית השדה ומעוף השמים הביאו בני האדם בימים ההם, וילמדום ללכת מין לאשר איננו מינו למען הכעיס את ה׳ בדבר הזה. וירא אלוקים את כל הארץ והנה נשחתה, כי השחית כל בשר את דרכו על הארץ כל האדם וכל הבהמה. ויאמר ה׳ אמחה את האדם אשר בראתי מעל פני האדמה, מאדם ועד עוף השמים ועד בהמה ועד החיה אשר בשדה כי ניחמתי כי עשיתים. ויהי כל איש אשר הלך בדרכי ה׳, מת בימים ההם. טרם הביא ה׳ על בני האדם את הרעה, אשר דיבר לעשות להם. כי מאת ה׳ היתה זאת להם לבלתי הראותם את הרעה, אשר דיבר ה׳ על בני האדם. ונח מצא חן בעיני ה׳, ויבחר בו ה׳ הוא ובניו לחיות מהם זרע על פני כל הארץ.
15 And when Lamech was one hundred and eighty-one years of age, he went and took Ashmia, the daughter of Elisha, son of Enoch his uncle, to wife, and she conceived. At that time the sons of man sowed and had somewhat of a harvest in return. But the people did not turn from their evil ways and they revolted against their masters. And after a year came around the wife of Lamech bare a son, and Methuselah called his name Noah, saying: The earth has ceased in his days to destroy the seed. But Lamech his father called him Menachem, saying: This one will comfort us concerning our work and the toil of our hands, because of the ground which the Lord hath cursed. And the boy grew up and was weaned, and he walked in the paths of his sire Methuselah, ever upright and perfect with the Lord.And at that time all the sons of man, as they increased and multiplied begetting sons and daughters upon the face of the earth, turned from the ways of the Lord. And they taught one another their wickedness, and they grew more and more refractory and rebellious against the Lord. And every man manufactured his own god, and they plundered and robbed and persecuted every man his neighbors and his relatives, and they corrupted the earth, and all the earth was full of violence. And even their judges and overseers would go among all the daughters of man, and take them to wives by force even from the sides of their husbands, if so they chose. And also of the cattle and of the beasts of the fields, and of the birds of the air, the sons of man would bring together and train them to mate each other, one kind with another kind, in order to provoke the Lord with such transgressions. And God saw the whole earth and behold it was corrupt, for all flesh hath perverted its ways upon the earth, all men as well as all the animals. And the Lord said, I will wipe out the man whom I have created from the entire face of the earth, all flesh, even from man unto the fowl of heaven, the cattle and the beast of the field; for it repenteth me having made them. And the few good men that still remained upon the earth died in those days, before the Lord was to bring about the evil which he resolved to do unto all flesh, for it so pleased the Lord that they should not live to see the great curse which the Lord had pronounced, to come over the sons of man. Noah and his sons however found grace in the eyes of God, and the Lord selected them to preserve through them seed upon the whole earth.
